Why Other People are the Causes of Low Self Esteem

Posted by admin | Posted in Demotivation | Posted on 27-05-2009

Newborn babies have no self esteem problems. They have no concept of failure or falling short of

expectations. In a very real sense, our interactions with other people are the root causes of low self esteem.

Since you cannot avoid interacting with people, you have to learn how to identify these causes and stop them

from affecting you.

Low Self Esteem From The People You Know

Parents lay the foundation for self image. Children understand that parents expect certain things of them,

and if they fail these expectations, it can decrease their sense of self worth. It is important for parents to

realize the limits to which they can push their offspring to excellence. You cannot change your past, and you

cannot blame your parents for wanting you to succeed, but what you can change is the way you look at it.

Acknowledge the love, learn to set aside the disappointment, and move on.

Your partner also has certain expectations regarding your relationship, so it is important that these

expectations are verbalized. Constant dialogue is important as there can be no greater blow to self image that

being though of as falling short of an ideal that you do not even know about. The same principle can be

applied to relationships with friends and relatives. Be sure that you can clarify your role and understand

what they expect of you.

Work relationships are at once both easier and harder on self image. On one hand, your job description

makes the expectations of the people in the workplace crystal clear. On the other hand, this clarity also

makes in easier to point out your shortcomings. What is important in this situation is to realize that a job is

an opportunity for growth. If you do no have the required skills yet, identify them so you can acquire them

and meet your goals.

Low Self Esteem From The People You Don’t Know

The opinions of total strangers affect all of us to a certain degree. These perceptions may reach your in many

different ways. You may overhear comments of people as you walk down the street. You may read comments

about you written in blogs or articles. You may identify with certain groups that are discussed in the media,

such as on TV or in magazine articles.

Judgments from people who do not know you can sometimes be more devastating than from those close to

you. You may feel unfairly judged or belittled. Worse, you may even partially agree to these negative

pronouncements. This can push your self image even lower. What is important is to identify the feeling and

examine its cause. If you cannot dispute a negative observation yourself, look for positive affirmation. People

who know you can help you set these things into perspective. Many resources both online and in print can

prove these judgments wrong. You may want to avoid magazines or TV shows that make frequent erroneous

pronouncements.

As you can see, our perception of failing other people’s expectations is the seed from which poor self image

sprouts. These causes of low self esteem are ubiquitous and unavoidable so you must learn to guard against

them if you want to grow. Learning to deal with other people in a positive way is the one sure path to

confidence and a good self image.

Negative Influences of Media on the Society

Posted by admin | Posted in Demotivation | Posted on 15-05-2009

There is no doubt that the media influences us.  To state some examples to prove this claim, try answering the questions that follow.  Do you feel like

attempting a stunt from a movie?  Do you base your fashion on what you see the celebrities are wearing?  Do you copy the hairstyle of your favorite famous

personalities?  Have you ever attempted to walk model-like in an attempt to imitate those ramp models in fashion shows?  If you answered yes to any of these

questions, then it is accepting the influence on media in your life.  However, it is important to dwell on the negative influences of media because these can

change the dynamics of the society for the worse.

The media affects the way we act and think.  It has a profound influence on the behavior of its audience.  When people try to imitate something we had seen

or heard, are they capable enough to distinguish between right from wrong?  Young people often imitate their role models blindly.  What is being highlighted

in the entertainment industry is the wrongdoings of these celebrities whom the young people idolize.  And because they are heroes in the youth’s minds, they

are still celebrated despite the bad behavior they have been showing to the public.

This highlighting of the media is a negative effect on society.  They satiate the people’s hunger for trivial information and rumors.  They create buzz by

hyping the issues with flowery words and provoking descriptions.  Controversies are created left and right to get the attention of people.

Another negative influence of media is eating disorders.  A significant number of youth nowadays are suffering from eating disorders attributable to

unhealthy lifestyles that are emerging.  The television programs, movies, and even print materials often showcase this lifestyle as fun activities despite

their negative effect on health.  Media hypes the acceptability of vices.

It has also been observed that children nowadays do not do the same activities as children of before.  Instead of reading books, studying, playing outdoors

with other children, and engaging in social activities, they end up being cooped up in their rooms watching television.  And because of technological

advancements and the availability of gadgets to young people, these children end up spending a significant amount of time in front of their computers and

handheld video games.

Because Internet is readily available to children, they end up reading and learning things, which are not suitable for their age.  They get exposed to

indecency and inappropriate acts.  They become wrapped up in a different world—a world of fantasy.

The changes in the behavior and outlook of people towards life are attributable to the negative psychological effects of media.  Changes in cultural and

moral values have been observed.  Many people believe that what is depicted by the media is true and acceptable, altering their judgment and causing

altercations.

The negative influences of media are vast.  It affects the physical self, the emotions, the psychological aspect, and even the spiritual stand of many

people.  One negative influence can trigger another negative effect and this can cause a chain of reaction leading to destruction of relationships in

society.

People must be vigilant to minimize these negative influences by being responsible towards oneself and other people especially the youth who are easy targets

by the media.

In TCS- earlier Performers were sidelined/harassed and non-performing political people thrived. any change now

Posted by admin | Posted in Demotivation | Posted on 25-01-2009

A few years back when I was working in TCS Management Consultancy group, all the Top performers were getting victimized , misutilized and harassed and ended up leaving TCS, while all the non performing staff who used to mess up and mis-deliver client projects, but were very good in internal TCS politics and groupism, used to get high importance/recognition. Was a very disillusioning first hand experience..
All the good professionals (new people) who tried to take initiatives for improvement, were harassed and even abused by the highly predominant low quality non-performing older staff in TCS, and left the firm after demotivation on this environment. As a result, all the low quality and less educated people who stuck to TCS past 10-20 years are probably occupying most of senior positions nowadays, while all the good people left due to demotivation and harassment etc. This was a big and very sad loss of highly capable and sincere manpower due to the organization's cultural failure.

I agree with your comments, Ram. I also saw these thiings happening in TCS. I think a lot of less educated people had joined TCS in late 80s / early 90 time frame, not by any qualifications, but mainly by reference/relation of some higher ups in TCS or Tata sons. Not to identify any religion specially, but a lot of them were from 'Parsi' community. I do not want to take too many names, but clearly remember a person called FALI J SEERVAI who did not even have a proper Engineering Degree, but used to be related to some senior Parsi people in Tata Group. He used to openly bully, abuse and insult all the good sincere qualified consultants in TCS. He used to tell everyone that he was related to Top Parsi people in Tata group and can get them fired if he wants, so people were afraid to even complain. There were many people like this in TCS, who were total non-performers but were relatives of senior people in Tata/TCS. They never used to work themselves, and also did not allow the sincere qualified people in TCS to work. I myself saw these type of unqualified people ( with high up relatives in Tata group) openly harassing and playing very dirty games with some genuine honest top-performing consultants in TCS, who left TCS due to this bad stressful environment. I do not think TCS ever took action against these type of people as they were connected to some higher ups etc. This was very sad indeed..
